Plastic Waste and Housing Deficits

Ghana generates over 1.2 million tonnes of plastic waste each year but recycles only 2%. This unmanaged waste contributes to severe flooding that destroys over 9,000 homes annually. At the same time, the country faces a housing deficit of 1.8 million units due to high construction costs. Both crises demand innovative, sustainable solutions.

Transforming Plastic into Eco-Bricks

Dreams Eco-Ven transforms plastic waste into durable, water-resistant bricks by combining cleaned HDPE, LDPE, and PP plastics with sand using low-energy methods. These eco-bricks are 25% cheaper than clay blocks, cut plastic pollution, and provide affordable, climate-smart alternatives for housing construction in Ghana.

Impact and Achievements

Dreams Eco-Ven has demonstrated that waste can be converted into opportunity by producing plastic brick prototypes, acquiring land for a factory, and building partnerships for waste sourcing and processing.

Building the Future from Waste

To scale its operations, Dreams Eco-Ven requires investment to industrialise production, certify its eco-bricks, and expand distribution networks across Ghana. With these resources, the project can reduce plastic waste at scale and help close Ghana’s 1.8 million-unit housing deficit.

It has been a truly transformative experience with the Africa Youth Climate Hub sharpening my understanding of climate change, climate action, and their urgency. At the same time, the fellowship offered invaluable expert guidance that helped refine my business idea for Dreams Eco-Ven into an investment-ready and a more impactful climate-smart venture.
